Current work areas (work themes) of the Environment for Europe process

In this website section, we provide summary information on the current main work areas (work "themes") of the Environment for Europe (EfE) process. Note that the work themes presented below have been defined by us in order to allow for fast and user-friendly access to relevant information. Therefore, these categories should not be interpreted as "official" work categories or work themes of the EfE process.

Biodiversity and sustainable development in mountain areas

This webpage offers information on past and present work related to the implementation of the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy (PEBLDS). In addition, information is available on sustainable development in mountain areas, a work area that relates to a new Convention on environmental protection and sustainable development of the Carpathians and other ongoing activities.

Sustainable consumption and production

Sustainable Consumption and Production relates to the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, in particular the Marrakech process. Past and current work under EfE focuses on issues such as: Sustainable Industrial Production, Transport, Building, Food, Waste and Sustainable Public Procurement.

Energy and environment

Energy and environment has been a theme in the Environment for Europe (EfE) process since 1991. Issues covered include energy efficiency, climate change, renewable energy sources, financing of investment projects.

Environment and security

Environment and security work focuses on the EECCA and South East Europe regions and aims at securing peace and stability by enhancing the sustainable use of natural resources, by fostering the sound management of hazardous waste and by promoting environmental awareness, participation in decision making and public access to information.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Current Education for Sustainable Development work is implemented based on the UNECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development.

Environmental finance

Environmental finance has been an EfE focus area of both the EAP Task Force and the Project Preparation Committee (PPC) since 1993. However, the 2008 EAP Task Force work program does not feature anymore any separate environmental financing work program, and, the PPC was internalized into EBRD operations based on the decision of ministers at the 2007 Belgrade Conference. As a large body of work and reports on environmental finance has been completed in the period 1993-2007, we continue to provide links to this work.

Infrastructure (water supply and sanitation)

The EAP Task Force water supply and sanitation (WSS) work program is designed to assist municipal water sector reform by developing recommendations for legal and institutional reform, tariff reform, improved financial management of utilities, as well as consumer protection and customer involvement in decision-making. The web page offers detailed information on the work program and includes links to recent main reports.

Legally binding instruments

Current work involves progress in the implementation of five UNECE multilateral environmental treaties, including the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context, the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents, and the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.

Environmental policies, enforcement and compliance

This webpage focuses on past and current work in the EAP Task Force work program on environmental policy reform in EECCA countries.

State of the environment assessment

This webpage offers information on pan-European state of the environment reporting, the Environmental Performance Review program focusing on EECCA and SEE countries, as well as past and current activities of the "Working Group on Environmental Monitoring and Assessment".
